A open letter to Apple

This will probably sound bitter…but I’m not going to apologise.

I’ve owned 3 iPods in my life, my first was a Nano 1G for Christmas.  I didn’t expect the gift from Dael so was very surprised and chuffed.  With it I discovered Podcasts and the world of iTunes.

I then purchased my second for Dael an iPod Shuffle 1G, the idea was she used it when she went for runs.  She found it annoying having things in her ears when running so I ended up using it when I went cycling.

2 years pretty much to the day the Nano stop working, first the click wheel stopped working and then the battery stopped holding charge.  I can’t remember how much it would cost to fix, but it didn’t make any sense spending the money on it….as the iPod Touch had just come out and that was what I really wanted anyway.

I purchased the iPod Touch pretty much on my birthday, $420 loved it from day 1, couldn’t understand how I had managed to get by without it.  Checking emails at breakfast, then read the news and then checking how Everton were doing.  Started downloading more podcast’s watching video podcast’s and even got to the point Dael would say are you going marry that thing…

1 year and 3 weeks into my ownership the Touch did not turn on again, quick flash of a distorted Apple Icon and then the white screen of death.

Googled white screen of death, everyone said send it back to apple get a new one it’s all over…

Great mines out of warranty, I spoke to a iPod repair company, they said to talk to Apple you might be lucky and get someone who will let you claim on warranty because it’s only 3 weeks over.  I thought cool worth a try…I rang Apple I was surprised when they said it will cost me NZ$45 to speak to technical support.  So I hung up and investigated getting it repaired.  Thinking a couple hundred dollars wouldn’t be too bad…

Sent my iPod repair to a company, for NZ$10 they would look at it.  After a week of them looking at it they said it was a faulty motherboard and probably best to sell the Touch on Trademe, I asked how much it would cost to fix and the said NZ$280 for the motherboard + NZ$75 labour.  A new iPod is NZ$389.

Very annoy and frustrated I then went on the apple discussion board and wrote this post….

Well Well Well, seems I’m back again to complain about the iPod. Last time it was a iPod Nano 1st Gen that died after 2 years (pretty much to the day) of use.
I got over that by buying a iPod Touch…spent the last 12 months and 3 weeks happy buying apps, buying accessories for my car, annoying the missus by ignoring her while checking my email…
Little did I know that it would fail 3 weeks out of warranty and Apple have no interest other than saying it will cost me NZ$45 for me to talk to a tech person.
I went off and sent iPod to some guys in a shop to have a look at for 10 bucks. They said what I expect, that it screwed needs a new motherboard and would cost me NZ$280  for parts + NZ$75 labour to get fixed…and the cost of a new iPod is NZ$389.
Really Apple is that how you treat your customers?
I have recommended to friends and they have brought, now I will look like an *** when theirs fails after 1 year and 3 weeks…
Cheers

I then received this reply…

Quote ‘Really Apple is that how you treat your customers?’

Are you suggesting that Apple designed the iPod Touch to fail, and if so do you have evidence to support it other than accusatory rhetoric? Otherwise I just don’t understand your post. To me it sounds like Apple did nothing wrong…

I  replied, although I don’t remember exactly what I wrote but basically told the guy that obviously Apple don’t make iPod to fail and don’t insult me…

The reason I can’t put exactly what I typed it because this morning I received an email from Apple saying that my post had been pulled.  Apple pointed I should have used the feedback form, so I copy and pasted the same post to Apple.

I don’t expect a reply or anything from them, but really not happy (not sure if you could pick that up…) and wish I hadn’t told my friends to go out and buy a Touch because when it fails I get phone calls asking how to fix it, I will have to say to them sorry it’s out of it’s year warranty and it will cost as much to fix it as it does to buy a new one.

I think I should stop now, maybe someone from Apple will read this and put in a decent comment.  Although I expect abuse from the Apple lovers out there who think the company can do no wrong.
